Hypertension

    W.H.O define HTN as systolic BP equal to greater than 160 mm of Hg and /Or Diastolic pressure equal to or greater than 95 mm of Hg. There are Two types of HTN : Essential (or) Primary where exact cause is not known. Secondary due to disease of kidney, adrenal, glands, narrowing of AORTA, Pregnancy.

    PREVALANCE :

    25 % of adults have HTN in industrialized countries India 59.9 to 69.9 per 1000 in males and females in urban population and 35.5 to 35.9 per 1000 in rural population.

    MORTALITY :-

    Major risk factor for stroke , heart disease , kidney and heart failure .

    RISK FACTORS : -

    1. Increases with age.
    2. Genetic
    3. Obesity
    4. High salt intake.
    5. Consumption saturated fats and or increased serum cholesterol.
    6. High alcohol intake.
    7. Sedentary life style.
    8. Stress
    9. Oral Contraceptives in females.

    PRIMARY PREVENTION :-

    1. Life style modification
    2. Weight reduction
    3. Stop smoking and alcohol
    4. Reduce salt and saturated fat intake

    TREATMENT :-

    Antihypertensives , diuretics to maintain BP at desirable levels. Life style modification

    SECONDARY PREVENTION :-

    Disease awareness by health education.
